HSIL (High-Grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesion)
HSIL, or High-Grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesion, is a term used in cervical screening to describe changes in the skin-like cells on the cervix that are considered more serious and have a higher risk of progressing to cervical cancer if left untreated. It indicates the presence of some abnormal cell growth caused by persistent infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV). Detection typically involves a Pap smear or HPV test. While HSIL doesn’t mean cancer, it requires careful follow-up, monitoring, and often treatment to remove abnormal cells and prevent the development of cervical cancer.
