House Committee on Un-American Activities
The House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC) was a U.S. congressional committee active mainly in the 1930s-1950s. Its goal was to investigate alleged disloyalty and subversive activities related to communism, fascism, and other government threats. HUAC held hearings, often scrutinizing Hollywood, government employees, and private citizens, seeking to root out those considered sympathetic to communist ideas during the Cold War. Its investigations sometimes led to widespread fear, blacklists, and violations of civil liberties. The committee was disbanded in 1975, but its legacy remains a symbol of political scrutiny during a tense period in American history.
