Horizon Oil Spill (Deepwater Horizon)
The Horizon Oil Spill, caused by the Deepwater Horizon explosion in April 2010, was a catastrophic offshore oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico. An explosion on the drilling rig led to a blowout, releasing millions of barrels of oil into the ocean over 87 days. This environmental disaster damaged marine ecosystems, affected local economies, and highlighted safety and regulatory failures in deepwater drilling. Efforts to cap the well and contain the spill involved complex, large-scale operations, ultimately resulting in one of the largest environmental disasters in U.S. history.
