Hobo Code
The Hobo Code was a system of symbols used by transient workers (hobos) in the early 20th century to communicate with each other along railroads and in communities. These symbols, often scratched or drawn in secret, conveyed useful information such as safe places to stay, where to find work, or warnings about dangers. The code helped hobos navigate unfamiliar areas, find help, and stay safe without speaking directly to strangers. It served as a discreet, practical language that fostered mutual aid among transient populations during challenging economic times.
