HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitors
HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, commonly called statins, are medications that help lower cholesterol levels in the blood. They work by blocking a specific enzyme in the liver—HMG-CoA reductase—that is essential for producing cholesterol. By reducing cholesterol, especially LDL or "bad" cholesterol, statins help decrease the risk of heart disease and stroke. They are widely prescribed for people with high cholesterol or at risk for cardiovascular problems. While effective, they may have side effects, so healthcare providers monitor patients regularly to ensure safety and effectiveness.
