HLA-B27 Associated Diseases
HLA-B27 is a protein on the surface of cells that some people have due to their genetics. It is linked to certain autoimmune diseases, where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own tissues. The most common associated conditions include ankylosing spondylitis (a type of arthritis that affects the spine), reactive arthritis, and even certain types of inflammatory bowel disease. Not everyone with HLA-B27 will get these diseases, but having it increases the risk. Understanding this connection helps in diagnosing and managing these conditions effectively.
