History of the Crusades

The Crusades were a series of religious wars between the 11th and 13th centuries, primarily initiated by European Christians to reclaim Jerusalem and the Holy Land from Muslim rule. The First Crusade began in 1096, resulting in the capture of Jerusalem in 1099. Subsequent crusades aimed to defend or retake Christian territories but were met with mixed success. These conflicts significantly impacted Christian-Muslim relations, trade, and cultural exchanges, and had lasting effects on European and Middle Eastern societies. Ultimately, the Crusades exemplified the complex interplay of faith, politics, and power during the medieval period.
