History of Space Militarization
The history of space militarization began during the Cold War, as the U.S. and the USSR recognized the strategic importance of space for national security. Satellites were deployed for communication, reconnaissance, and navigation. In the 1980s, the U.S. proposed the Strategic Defense Initiative, aimed at using space-based systems to intercept missiles. As technology advanced, nations globally began developing anti-satellite weapons. Today, various countries, including China and Russia, are expanding their military capabilities in space, leading to concerns about an arms race and the potential for conflict beyond Earth's atmosphere. International agreements aim to regulate these military activities.
