Histoplasma capsulatum
Histoplasma capsulatum is a fungus that can cause an infection called histoplasmosis. It is commonly found in soil, especially where there are bird or bat droppings. People can get infected by breathing in tiny spores released into the air during activities like digging or cleaning contaminated areas. Most healthy people experience mild or no symptoms, but some may develop flu-like illness or more severe lung problems. The infection can sometimes spread beyond the lungs, affecting other parts of the body. Proper diagnosis and treatment, often with antifungal medications, are important for managing histoplasmosis.
