Histoplasma

Histoplasma is a type of fungus found mainly in soil enriched with bird or bat droppings. When people inhale its tiny spores, the fungus can cause an infection called histoplasmosis. Most healthy individuals experience mild or no symptoms, but in some, especially those with weakened immune systems, it can lead to flu-like symptoms, respiratory issues, or more severe illness. The infection is often diagnosed through blood tests or scans, and treatment typically involves antifungal medications. Histoplasma is common in certain areas, such as the Ohio and Mississippi River valleys in the United States.
