Histiocytes
Histiocytes are a type of immune cell found in the body's tissues that help protect against infection and remove damaged or dead cells. They are related to white blood cells called macrophages and are involved in the body's defense system by identifying, capturing, and digesting germs, debris, and abnormal cells. Histiocytes play a critical role in coordinating immune responses and maintaining tissue health. When they function properly, they help prevent illness, but problems with these cells can sometimes lead to rare diseases characterized by abnormal growth or accumulation of histiocytes.
