High-altitude ecosystems
High-altitude ecosystems are environments found on mountains and elevated regions, typically above 2,500 meters (8,200 feet). These areas experience colder temperatures, lower oxygen levels, and intense sunlight. Adapted plants and animals here have special features to survive harsh conditions, such as thick fur, specialized lungs, or tough, drought-resistant vegetation. These ecosystems are fragile and host unique species that contribute to global biodiversity. Despite their extreme environment, they sustain many forms of life and are vital for understanding climate change, water sources, and ecological resilience.
