Hierarchy of Controls
The Hierarchy of Controls is a system used to reduce or eliminate workplace hazards. It prioritizes actions from most effective to least effective. The top levels include outright elimination of the hazard, followed by substitution with a safer alternative. Next are engineering controls that isolate people from hazards, then administrative controls like training and policies. Lastly, personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves or masks is used as a last line of defense. This approach ensures that the most effective safety measures are implemented first to protect workers effectively.
