Hexosaminidase A

Hexosaminidase A is an enzyme, a type of protein that helps break down certain complex molecules in the body. Specifically, it helps digest a fat-like substance called GM2 ganglioside, which is found in nerve cells. Proper functioning of this enzyme ensures these substances are broken down and removed efficiently. When Hexosaminidase A doesn't work properly due to genetic mutations, GM2 ganglioside builds up in the brain and nervous system, leading to serious neurological problems. This condition is known as Tay-Sachs disease.
