Herring v. United States
Herring v. United States (2009) was a Supreme Court case examining whether police mistakes warrant excluding evidence. In this case, law enforcement mistakenly believed an arrest warrant was still active, leading them to arrest Herring, during which they found drugs. The Court held that, because the mistake was an isolated error and the police acted in good faith based on outdated information, the evidence discovered should not be automatically excluded. The ruling emphasizes that if police act reasonably based on available information, evidence obtained from their search may be admissible, even if later it turns out some details were inaccurate.
