Herpetic Eye Disease

Herpetic eye disease refers to inflammation of the eye caused by the herpes virus, most commonly HSV-1, which can lead to uveitis. Uveitis is the inflammation of the uvea, the middle layer of the eye that includes the iris. This condition can cause symptoms like redness, pain, blurred vision, and light sensitivity. The herpes virus can remain dormant in the body and reactivate, causing flare-ups of eye inflammation. Ocular immunology studies how the immune system responds to such infections, helping to develop treatments to manage symptoms and prevent complications from this potentially serious eye condition.
