Hermatypic corals

Hermatypic corals are a type of coral that build and form coral reefs. They have hard, calcium carbonate skeletons that create the foundation of reefs, providing habitat for many marine species. These corals contain tiny algae called zooxanthellae, which live inside their tissues. The algae perform photosynthesis, converting sunlight into nutrients that help the corals grow—this relationship also gives the corals their vibrant colors. Hermatypic corals rely on sunlight and clean, clear water to thrive and are vital for sustaining rich, diverse underwater ecosystems.
