hepatization of the lung
Hepatization of the lung refers to a stage in pneumonia where the affected lung tissue becomes dense, liver-like, resembling the texture and appearance of a liver on inspection or imaging. This happens because the lung tissue fills with inflammatory cells, fluid, and dead cells, replacing the normal air spaces. As a result, the lung loses its usual spongy, airy feel and becomes firm and solid. This process indicates a severe infection and impaired lung function, often seen in consolidated pneumonia, and helps in diagnosing the extent and nature of the lung inflammation.
