Henry George (economist)
Henry George was an economist and social reformer known for his idea that land is a common resource, not owned by individuals but shared by society. He argued that because land value increases due to community development, the economic benefit from this should be shared through a single tax on land ownership, called the “land value tax.” This approach aims to reduce inequality, prevent land monopolies, and encourage productive use of land. George believed this system could create a fairer economy by ensuring that landowners contribute to the community’s prosperity.
