Henri Hartmann

Henri Hartmann was a Swiss surgeon known for developing the Hartmann procedure, a surgical technique used to treat serious conditions like perforated colon or diverticulitis. In this procedure, the affected part of the colon is removed, the end of the healthy colon is brought out through the abdominal wall to form a stoma (bag), and the remaining bowel is closed. This approach helps control infection and stabilize the patient. Later, if possible, surgeons may reconnect the bowel in a follow-up operation. Overall, Hartmann's work has significantly advanced emergency gastrointestinal surgery.
