Henri de Tonti
Henri de Tonti was an Italian-born explorer and soldier in the late 17th century, known for his role in early American exploration and French colonial efforts. He was a trusted companion of explorer Robert de La Salle, helping establish French claims in North America. Tonti was notable for losing his right hand during a battle and then wearing a prosthetic iron hand, earning him the nickname “Iron Hand.” His leadership and daring spirit contributed significantly to France’s presence in the Mississippi River region, helping to expand early European settlements in North America.
