Helsinki Commission (HELCOM)
The Helsinki Commission (HELCOM) is an international organization established in 1974 to protect the marine environment of the Baltic Sea. Comprising the countries bordering the Baltic, HELCOM creates agreements and guidelines to reduce pollution, manage ecosystems sustainably, and address environmental challenges like overfishing and habitat loss. Its goal is to promote cooperation among member states to ensure the Baltic Sea remains healthy and productive for future generations. HELCOM operates through scientific assessments, policy development, and implementation support, fostering collaboration among governments, scientists, and stakeholders dedicated to marine environmental protection.
