The Heisei period in Japan refers to the era spanning from January 8, 1989, to April 30, 2019, marking Emperor Akihito’s reign. Named after the era name “Heisei,” meaning “achieving peace,” this period saw significant economic and technological changes, including the rise of the internet and advancements in robotics. It also experienced major events like the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and the subsequent Fukushima nuclear disaster. The era ended when Emperor Akihito abdicated, succeeded by Emperor Naruhito, marking the start of the Reiwa period. The Heisei era reflects Japan’s ongoing modernization and resilience through decades of social and economic transformation.
