Heijo Kimbun
Heijo Kimbun is the ancient legal code established in Japan during the Nara period (7th to 8th centuries), serving as the foundation for the country’s legal and administrative systems. Drafted in 718, it was based on Chinese legal principles, specifically the Tang code, and aimed to organize government structure, define laws, and regulate social order. Although it was replaced by later codes, Heijo Kimbun played a crucial role in shaping Japan’s legal tradition and centralized governance during early Japanese history.
