HEFCE (Higher Education Funding Council for England)
The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) was a government body responsible for overseeing the distribution of public funding for higher education institutions in England. Established in 1992 and operating until 2018, HEFCE aimed to ensure that universities and colleges received financial support to promote quality education, research, and access for students. It monitored performance and set funding priorities to improve the higher education sector. After its closure, its responsibilities were transferred to the Office for Students (OfS), which continues to regulate and support higher education in England.
