Hector Pieterson
Hector Pieterson was a 13-year-old student in South Africa who became a symbol of the fight against apartheid, a system of racial segregation. He was accidentally shot and killed during the 1976 Soweto Uprising, when students protested being forced to learn in Afrikaans. His death was widely covered by the media and drew international attention to the brutal repression of peaceful protests. Today, his image, captured in a powerful photograph, reminds people of the struggle for equality and justice in South Africa.
