head impulse test (HIT)

The Head Impulse Test (HIT) is a clinical procedure used to assess the balance system in your inner ear, specifically the vestibular function. During the test, the healthcare provider quickly turns your head to one side while you keep your eyes fixed on a target. If your inner ear and related pathways are working properly, your eyes will automatically and quickly correct their position to stay focused on the target. If your eyes don’t correct quickly, it may indicate a problem in your vestibular system, helping doctors diagnose issues like dizziness or balance disorders.
