Hazard Quotient

The Hazard Quotient (HQ) is a number used to assess the potential health risk of exposure to a substance, like a chemical. It’s calculated by dividing the amount of the substance a person is exposed to by a level considered safe or acceptable. An HQ of 1 or less suggests the exposure is within safe limits and unlikely to cause harm. An HQ greater than 1 indicates the exposure exceeds safe levels, suggesting a potential health concern that may require further evaluation or action. The HQ helps scientists and regulators determine if protective measures are needed.
