Haweswater

Haweswater is a reservoir in northwest England, created by damming the River Haweswater in the 1920s. Its purpose was to supply water to nearby cities like Manchester. The construction flooded the original village of Mardale Green, displacing residents and altering the landscape. Today, Haweswater is known for its scenic beauty, wildlife, and status as a popular hiking destination. It also gained literary fame through the poem "Haweswater" by John Dryden, which reflects on the loss of the village and the natural environment. The reservoir remains an important part of the region’s water infrastructure and natural heritage.
