Hawaiian Anti-Annexation Movement

The Hawaiian Anti-Annexation Movement was a campaign advocating against the United States' annexation of Hawaii in 1898. Native Hawaiians and their supporters wanted to maintain Hawaii’s independence, sovereignty, and cultural identity, opposing becoming a U.S. territory. They argued that annexation would undermine Hawaiian sovereignty, land rights, and traditions. The movement included petitions, protests, and efforts to raise awareness about the implications of annexation. Although they were ultimately unsuccessful at the time, the movement highlighted ongoing issues of Native Hawaiian self-determination and sovereignty.
