Haugean Revival
The Haugean Revival was a religious movement in Norway during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, sparked by lay preacher Hans Nielsen Hauge. Emphasizing personal faith, Bible study, and ethical living, it challenged the formal church hierarchy by encouraging ordinary people to actively participate in spiritual life. The movement promoted social reform, education, and a strong work ethic, influencing Norwegian society deeply. Despite facing persecution from authorities, it persisted and helped lay the foundation for Norway’s religious freedom and increased lay involvement in faith practices.
