Hatuey

Hatuey was a native TaĆno leader from Hispaniola who became a symbol of resistance against Spanish colonization in the early 1500s. Recognizing the threat of Spanish conquest, he led attacks to defend his people and their land. Hatuey is remembered for his courage and for warning fellow indigenous people about the cruelty of the Europeans, encouraging them to resist. His resistance made him a national hero and a symbol of indigenous rights and sovereignty in the Caribbean. Despite his eventual capture and execution, his legacy endures as a symbol of indigenous resilience.
