Harry Glicken
Harry Glicken was an influential American volcanologist known for his work on volcanic hazards and the behavior of volcanoes. He focused particularly on understanding pyroclastic flows—fast-moving currents of hot gas and volcanic matter that can be deadly. Glicken’s research emphasized the importance of monitoring volcanoes to anticipate eruptions and protect communities. Tragically, he lost his life during the 1991 eruption of Mount Unzen in Japan while conducting fieldwork. His contributions have helped improve safety measures and risk assessment in volcanology, underscoring the need for ongoing research and monitoring of volcanic activity.
