Harkis

Harkis were Algerian Muslims who supported France during the Algerian War of independence (1954-1962). They fought alongside French forces and believed remaining connected to France was beneficial. When Algeria gained independence, many Harkis faced hostility and violence from Algerian nationalists, leading to mass migration, primarily to France. Their loyalty was often misunderstood or undervalued, and they faced discrimination and hardship as a community. Today, Harkis are recognized for their complex history and the sacrifices they made, but their legacy remains a sensitive and significant part of both Algerian and French histories.
