Halocarbons

Halocarbons are chemical compounds made by replacing some or all of the hydrogen atoms in hydrocarbons with halogen atoms such as fluorine, chlorine, bromine, or iodine. They are often used in refrigeration, air conditioning, aerosol sprays, and fire extinguishers because of their stability and non-flammability. However, many halocarbons, especially chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), have been found to damage the ozone layer and contribute to global warming. Efforts have been made internationally to phase out the most harmful halocarbons and find safer alternatives to protect the environment.
