Halobates

Halobates are a genus of marine insects known as "marine water striders." They are unique because they live exclusively on the ocean's surface, unlike most insects that are land or freshwater dwellers. These insects have specialized legs that allow them to skate across the water, feeding on tiny bits of organic matter and small microorganisms. Halobates are fascinating because they have adapted to survive in a challenging environment, in some cases for years, and they play a role in the ocean's surface ecosystem. They are among the few insects that have successfully colonized the open sea.
