Haitian military history
Haiti's military history is shaped by its fight for independence and subsequent political instability. The Haitian Revolution (1791-1804), led by Toussaint Louverture, resulted in the first successful slave revolt and the creation of Haiti as the first Black republic. The nation maintained a small military force for most of its history, often disbanding or limiting its power to prevent military influence in politics. In 1994, the Haitian National Police replaced the military, focusing on internal security. The military's role has been marked by struggles with corruption, coups, and efforts to establish stable governance, reflecting Haiti's ongoing challenges with political stability.
