HABs (Harmful Algal Blooms)

Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) occur when certain types of algae, which are usually harmless, grow rapidly in water bodies like lakes, rivers, or oceans. Under specific conditions—such as warm temperatures, excess nutrients from pollution, and calm waters—these algae can multiply excessively, forming visible patches or discoloration. Some HABs produce toxins that can harm aquatic life, animals, and humans, contaminating drinking water and seafood. They can also deplete oxygen in the water, causing fish kills. Managing nutrient runoff and monitoring water quality are essential to prevent and mitigate HAB impacts.
