Gymnogyps californianus
Gymnogyps californianus, commonly known as the California condor, is a large bird belonging to the vulture family. It is one of the world's rarest birds, characterized by its impressive wingspan of up to 10 feet, black plumage, and bald head. The condor primarily feeds on carrion—dead animals—and plays a vital role in the ecosystem by cleaning up carcasses. Once nearly extinct with fewer than 20 individuals in the 1980s, conservation efforts have increased their numbers through breeding programs and habitat protection. Today, the California condor remains critically endangered but is slowly recovering thanks to these dedicated efforts.
