Gulhane Edict
The Gulhane Edict, issued in 1839, was a formal proclamation by the Ottoman Sultan that marked a significant reform era. It aimed to modernize the empire's administrative system, improve the rights of its citizens, and reduce corruption. The edict emphasized equality before the law, the importance of justice, and introduced new legal reforms, including the creation of a more organized military. Essentially, it signaled the beginning of reforms to strengthen the empire internally and adapt to changing times, laying groundwork for more liberal policies and the eventual modernization of Ottoman society.
