Gukurahundi massacres

The Gukurahundi massacres were a series of violent events in Zimbabwe between 1983 and 1987, where the government’s military, primarily the North Korean-trained Fifth Brigade, targeted and killed thousands of civilians, mainly from the Ndebele ethnic group in the Matabeleland region. Intended to suppress political opposition and perceived threats, these massacres involved mass shootings, intimidation, and forced disappearances. They resulted from tensions following Zimbabwe's independence, and their legacy continues to impact national reconciliation and identity discussions today.
