Guilt Attribution Theory

Guilt Attribution Theory explains how individuals assign responsibility for a perceived wrongdoing and how that influences feelings of guilt. When someone commits an act that harms others, the affected person or observer evaluates factors like intent, control, and circumstances to determine blame. If they see the action as intentional and within the person's control, guilt is likely to be felt. Conversely, if the act was unintentional or beyond control, guilt may be lessened. This process of attributing responsibility shapes emotional responses, guiding behaviors such as apology, forgiveness, or punishment.
