Gubernatorial elections in Puerto Rico
Gubernatorial elections in Puerto Rico occur every four years to select the island's governor, who serves as the chief executive. Voters choose between candidates representing major political parties, mainly the Popular Democratic Party and the New Progressive Party. These elections coincide with the U.S. general elections in November. The governor oversees local government functions and represents Puerto Rico on matters of public policy, education, health, and more. Importantly, while Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, its residents cannot vote in U.S. presidential elections.
