GTS (Great Trigonometrical Survey)
The Great Trigonometrical Survey (GTS) was an ambitious scientific project initiated in India during the 19th century to measure the entire Indian subcontinent accurately. Using advanced tools of the time, surveyors established a network of triangulation points to determine precise locations, elevations, and distances across vast terrains. This large-scale effort improved maps, facilitated infrastructure development, and contributed to geographic and scientific knowledge. The GTS also famously aimed to measure the height of Mount Everest and to create one of the most accurate maps of India, laying the foundation for modern surveying and geodesy in the region.
