Groves v. John Wiley & Sons

Groves v. John Wiley & Sons (1939) is a legal case about a damaged property. Groves hired Wiley's company to install a reinforced concrete floor. During construction, parts of the floor were damaged. Groves did not explicitly tell Wiley how careful to be, but expected careful workmanship. Wiley’s team used a less costly method that caused damage. The court ruled Wiley was responsible because the damage resulted from not following the expected standard of care, even without explicit instructions. The case established that when a party agrees to perform a task, they must do so with proper care, and damages from negligence can make them liable.
