Group B Streptococcus

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a type of bacteria commonly found in the digestive and female reproductive tracts. It generally doesn't cause symptoms in healthy adults but can be passed from mother to baby during childbirth. In newborns, GBS can lead to serious infections such as pneumonia, blood infections, or meningitis, which can be life-threatening. Pregnant women are usually tested during late pregnancy, and if infected, may receive antibiotics during labor to prevent transmission. GBS is a common and manageable bacterial colonization, and with proper screening and treatment, risks to infants can be significantly reduced.
