groundwater banking

Groundwater banking is a water management practice where extra water obtained during times of abundance is stored underground for future use. Typically, agencies or landowners inject excess surface water into aquifers or allow it to seep in naturally, creating a "bank" of stored water beneath the earth’s surface. During dry periods or droughts, this stored water can be pumped out and used for agricultural, industrial, or municipal needs. It helps ensure a reliable water supply, reduces strain on surface water sources, and promotes sustainable groundwater management.
