Ground-Level Ozone (O3)
Ground-level ozone (O₃) is a type of air pollution formed when sunlight reacts with pollutants like nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds emitted from vehicles, industry, and other sources. Unlike the ozone layer high in the atmosphere that protects us from UV rays, ground-level ozone is harmful to breathe. It can cause respiratory problems, worsen asthma, and reduce lung function, especially during hot, sunny days. Managing emissions and reducing pollution sources are key to lowering ground-level ozone levels and protecting public health and the environment.
