Grimms' Law

Grimm's Law describes how the consonant sounds in Germanic languages like English have evolved from their original Indo-European roots. Essentially, it shows systematic sound changes: for example, the original "p" sounds in Indo-European words often became "f" in Germanic languages, "t" became "th" or "d," and "k" changed to "h" or became silent. These shifts help explain why related words across different languages, such as Latin "pater" and English "father," have consistent sound differences. Grimm's Law reveals the regular patterns behind these linguistic transformations during language development.
