Greenback

Greenback refers to the paper currency issued by the United States during the Civil War, primarily in 1861-1865. The term originates from the green ink used on the back of the bills. Initially, these notes were not backed by gold or silver, creating uncertainty about their value. However, they became an essential part of the U.S. monetary system and helped finance the war. Over time, greenbacks gained acceptance, leading to the establishment of a more stable currency. Today, "greenback" is often used informally to refer to the U.S. dollar.
